— BUSTY AND THE BASS (Montreal)
bustyandthebass.com/
With their seamless blend of soulful hip hop vocals, rap, signature brass and synths, Busty and the Bass is ushering in a new era of genre-defying sound. After meeting in their first week of the McGill University jazz program, the Montreal-based nine-piece quickly shot up from from packed house party jams to scorching live performances in front of thousands of fans across the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.

After building a dedicated international fan base off of the release of just two EPs — GLAM (2015) and LIFT (2016) — Busty is taking things to the next level with their forthcoming debut album, “Uncommon Good.” They’ve enlisted veteran producer and mixer Neal Pogue to guide the project, who is best known for his work with the likes of Outkast, Snoop Dogg, Earth Wind and Fire, MIA, Nicki Minaj, Aretha Franklin, and Lil Wayne.

The new album builds on a smooth foundational sound reminiscent of artists like Parliament, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Michael Jackson, weaving in the contemporary influence of Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, and James Blake. Each song on “Uncommon Good” feels like a single, from the brassy disco groove of “Up Top” to the Outkast-esque “Memories and Melodies” and the sensual, lyrical flow of “Common Ground.” The album synthesizes a swirling mixture of funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, dance music, and gospel that is layered, polished, and unified.

Busty’s natural chemistry and high-energy live show have made them an instant favorite with audiences around the world. Whether it’s your first Busty experience, or you know every time the cowbell comes in — you’re gonna dance.

This coming fall will mark the beginning of Busty and the Bass' world tour in support of their debut album, “Uncommon Good”, set for release September 8, 2017.

— STS x Khari Mateen
Three years in the making, Better on a Sunday is the latest project from rapper STS and producer Khari Mateen. The 10 song album draws upon their parallel childhoods in Atlanta and musical coming of age in Philly.

In 2000, poet STS (aka Sugar Tongue Slim) arrived in Philly for what was to be a short visit. Then known as a Mecca for slam poets, Slim fell for the City of Brotherly Love and never left. He made his rounds on the Slam scene and quickly rose to prominence, earning the praise of legendary poet Black Ice who would become his mentor.

He became a regular at Black Lily, the now legendary series that started in Quest’s living room. At the urging of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Slim began rapping. He went on to co-write Ciara’s massive hit record “Oh” which became her third top-five single and stayed on the Hot 100 for 23 weeks. Before long, Slim had a record deal w/ Def Jam. But just weeks after signing, he was in a near-fatal car accident. Unable to walk let alone record, the deal was over.

After a long recovery, he connected w/ Black Thought and joined his group, the Money Making Jam Boys. The project featured a host of producers including Questlove, Jazzy Jeff, and a young Khari Mateen. STS would go on to appear on The Roots album How I Got Over, including the track “Right On” featuring Joanna Newsom.

Slim has continued to collaborate with artists of all genres. In 2015, he released an LP w/ producer RJD2, titled STS X RJD2. The following year, he released his first solo effort in 8 years, Ladies Night, on Ropeadope.

His current project, Better on a Sunday, is a collaboration w/ producer and multi-instrumentalist, Khari Mateen (another member of the extended Roots crew). The album is 3 years in the making and began while the two were on the road w/ RJD2. The album will be released in January 2018 via Steel Wool (Anderson .Paak and Watsky).

Khari Mateen is a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist working all over the world. His first credits of note came with The Roots’ 2006 album Game Theory (Grammy nominated), for which he co-produced the title track, “Livin’ in a New World,” and “Clock with No Hands.” In addition to continuing his collaborations with The Roots — he contributed to Rising Down and Undun — he collaborated with Joy Denalane, Jill Scott, Tye Tribbett, James Poyser, J*Davey, and Roots offshoot, Money Making Jam Boys among others. In 2011, Khari produced “Make My,” the title track to The Roots’ Grammy nominated Undun. While producing, Khari began composing for independent films and TV shows. He scored the Sundance series Brick City, which went on to receive multiple Emmy nominations, as well as the HBO Documentary film, Prayer for the Perfect Season. In 2011, he began releasing solo recordings — Khari (EP) — and in 2012 he released his debut album Wait for Sunrise, a brief set of moody and slightly off-center R&B, through his label, The Lunchroom. Soul Train named it one of 2012’s best releases. Khari was also one of seven men featured in the 2012 Fall Men’s Issue, Philadelphia Style Magazine, Philly Men on the Fast Track to Success. Khari has toured the globe with both Cody Simpson and RJD2 amongst others. In September of 2016, Khari’s song “Day by Day” was placed on OWN Network’s hit television show, Queen Sugar, while simultaneously Fox Network released a project where Khari provided bass used for the re-creation of the music classic film, Rocky Horror Picture Show in October 2016. Khari is staying busy having scored the indie-documentary's We Could Be King and Keepers of the Game which both debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and has recently finished «Time: The Kalief Browder Story» for Spike TV.
