Swirl Wine Bar & Market
3143 Ponce de Leon St, New Orleans, Louisiana 70119
As the Provence rose consumption craze continues to break records, it becomes harder and harder to find wines from the region that truly have a sense of place. The classic grapes of the area, cinsault, grenache and syrah are consistently blended to produce lovely aromatic wines but tend to lack a specific identity. There are a few exceptions to that and the hot, arid village of Bandol sits in the top spot for me. The reason for this distinction is directly related to the main grape, Mourvèdre. Mourvèdre has one of the longest growing cycles of any wine grape, making it ideally suited to the region’s sunny, evenly warm climate.
In our flight tonight David Sobiesk will present wines from three of the top producers in the region, Domaine Tempier, Domaine Gros Nore' and Domaine Terrebrune. He'll present a red, white and rose, one from each producer while you learn what it is that makes this region so special. For those of you who are fans of Bandol, you know how difficult it is to get your hands on these wines so if you want to attend I HIGHLY suggest you make reservations as we will only pour 20 flights. We will also have a limited amount of these wines for sale that we will make available to attendees of the event before putting them on the shelves.
If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, resident cheesemonger Casey Foote will select and present a regional pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights — you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 — reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines are available for purchase to drink at Swirl or you can take them to go.
-As with all of our tastings and classes we ask that you not wear perfume, cologne or any other strong scents that could interfere with the wine's aromas for you and those around you.
-Refunds can be made with a minimum 3 days advance notice. Credit cannot be given towards future classes.
